Responsive search ad character limits: headlines, descriptions & paths

Google Ads headlines are limited to 30 characters (3 to 15 per ad), descriptions to 90 characters (2 to 4 per ad), and each of the two display paths to 15 characters. Spaces and punctuation count.

A Google Ads headline can be 30 characters long, including spaces, and every responsive search ad (RSA) needs at least 3 and at most 15 headlines. Descriptions can be 90 characters (at least 2, at most 4 per ad), and each of the two display path fields takes 15 characters.

Source: Google Ads Help — About responsive search ads and About text ads. The Google Ads API documentation confirms the minimums: at least 3 headlines, 2 descriptions and 1 final URL (Creating responsive search ads).

Two details catch people out:

  • Double-width characters count twice. Google states that every character in a double-width language like Korean, Japanese or Chinese counts as 2 characters. A Japanese headline therefore holds 15 characters, not 30.
  • Paths are display-only. Path 1 and Path 2 appear after your domain in the display URL (for example example.com/plumbing/emergency). They don't need to exist as real pages, but each segment is capped at 15.

For assets that sit under the ad, see the limits for sitelinks, callouts and structured snippets and other assets. All limits live on the Google Ads limits hub.

Do spaces count in Google Ads headlines?

Yes. Google's character counter in the ad editor counts every letter, number, space and punctuation mark as one character. There is no discount for spaces, hyphens, slashes or commas.

HeadlineCharacters
Same-Day Emergency Plumber NYC30
SameDayEmergencyPlumberNYC (spaces removed)26
Licensed Plumbers, Fast Repair30
Emergency Plumbers Near You Now31 (too long)

The first headline hits exactly 30: 26 letters, 3 spaces and 1 hyphen. Removing the spaces saves 4 characters but makes the ad unreadable. The last example fails by one character; dropping "Now" fixes it.

The same rule applies to descriptions. Licensed plumbers on call 24/7. Upfront pricing and no overtime fees. Book online today. is 88 characters and fits. Swap "and" for a comma and "today" for "in 2 minutes" and it grows to 92, over the 90 limit.

How many headlines Google actually shows

You can upload 15 headlines and 4 descriptions, but a single impression shows at most 3 headlines and 2 descriptions. Google's help page describes the fields as Headline 1 to 3 and Description 1 to 2:

  • Headline 1 and Description 1 usually appear whenever the ad serves.
  • Headline 2, Headline 3 and Description 2 may appear "based on what's predicted to perform best, or when there's enough space." They are not guaranteed.

That has two practical consequences:

  1. Every headline must stand on its own. Google may show headline 7 next to headline 2. Don't write headlines that only make sense as a sequence.
  2. Pinning costs flexibility. You can pin a headline to position 1, 2 or 3 (and a description to position 1 or 2). Google says pinning reduces the number of combinations that can be matched to a search, isn't recommended for most advertisers, and can affect Ad Strength. Pin only what legally or contractually must show, such as a disclaimer, and pin 2–3 alternatives to that slot instead of one.

Ad Strength rates the ad from Incomplete through Poor, Average and Good to Excellent. Google's guidance: provide as many headlines and descriptions as you can, keep them unique (no repeated words or ideas), include keyword text in headlines, and pin sparingly. A keyword only counts toward relevance if it fits entirely within one headline. Google reports that advertisers who move Ad Strength from Poor to Excellent see 15% more clicks and conversions on average. Source: About Ad Strength for responsive search ads.

Keyword insertion, countdowns & customizers

Dynamic text still has to fit the static limit, so plan for the longest value that could be inserted.

FeatureSyntax exampleWhat to plan for
Keyword insertion{KeyWord:Emergency Plumber}If the keyword is too long to fit, Google shows the default text instead (Keyword insertion).
CountdownSale Ends in {COUNTDOWN(...)}The countdown can generate a string up to 8 characters long (Countdowns).
Ad customizers{CUSTOMIZER.attribute:default}The default value is used when the customizer doesn't show or the text exceeds the character limit (Ad customizers for RSAs).

Working rules:

  • Write the default text to fit on its own. Emergency Plumber is 17 characters, which leaves room for longer keywords. Google does not publish how the braces and syntax themselves are counted, so check the counter in the editor rather than counting the raw code.
  • Reserve 8 characters for a countdown. Sale Ends in is 13 characters (with the trailing space), plus 8 for the countdown makes 21, safely under 30.
  • Double-width text halves your room. A 12-character keyword in Japanese uses 24 of the 30 characters, before any static text.

Common errors and how to fix them

"At least 3 headlines are required"Fewer than 3 valid headlines in the adFill at least 3 headline fields, each 30 characters or less
"At least 2 descriptions are required"Fewer than 2 valid descriptionsAdd a second description of 90 characters or less
Headline or description won't saveText is over 30 / 90 characters (remember double-width characters count 2)Shorten; check with the character counter
Ad Strength stuck at Poor or AverageFew or repetitive headlines, heavy pinning, no keywords in headlinesAdd unique headlines toward 15, unpin, put keyword text in 2–3 headlines
Keyword insertion shows default textInserted keyword exceeds the remaining spaceShorten the static text around the tag or accept the default

The "At least 3 headlines are required" message also appears in Google Ads Community threads from advertisers who see it despite having more headlines entered. In those cases, check for empty or rejected fields and for headlines that exceed the limit, since only valid headlines count toward the minimum.

A balanced RSA mixes all three groups, so any combination of 3 still reads as a complete ad: one relevance headline with the keyword, one proof or offer, one call to action.

Reuse headline sets that already work

Agencies usually rewrite the same RSA structure for every new client in the same industry: 15 headlines, 4 descriptions, paths, the same character-limit checks each time. AdsCockpit Templates lets you build a campaign once as a template and launch it for every client account in your manager account. Store the headline sets that have proven themselves per industry, swap the client-specific details, and skip the counting.

Once campaigns are live, Monitoring runs rules that watch every account in your MCC.

FAQ

What is the Google Ads headline character limit?

Each responsive search ad headline can be up to 30 characters. You must add at least 3 headlines and can add up to 15 per ad.

What is the Google Ads description character limit?

Each description can be up to 90 characters. A responsive search ad needs at least 2 descriptions and accepts up to 4.

The ad has fewer than 3 valid headlines. Add headlines until at least 3 are filled in, each 30 characters or less, then save again.
